Our under 16 hurlers made the long journey to Newmarket on this bank holiday Monday in the Rebel Og Div 3 hurling league and didn’t come away disappointed
From the minute the sliotar was thrown in the lads took the game to the home side putting them on the back foot with some well taken points from both play and frees from Joey Middleton and Callum Mulcahy contributing 1-1 which put Crosshaven into a very good position at half time leading by 1-10 ,
We were well on top all over the field despite the best efforts from a brave Newmarket team, but our full back line of Oisin Auzins and Fergus Murphy dealt well with any balls coming in and Louis Murphy who stood in goal for the first half was finding his man at all times with his puck outs.
Diarmuid Kelly controlled the halfback line aided by the solid Fionan McSweeney and Tommy Crowley, our midfield Joey Middleton and Shane Casey both made some great runs through the home defence resulting in scores or frees and in the forward line Callum was a treat every time he got the ball in hand. Conor McCarthy and Jack Ryan turned over some great possession making life difficult for the Newmarket half backs as did our inside line of Oscar Mansfield and Daniel Bywater.
The second half resumed and we continued where we left off with Callum adding a second goal to his tally a delightful ground strike from Daniel rattled the net once more. Diarmuid then scored a brilliant individual solo point from play as did Joey who added another two superb points from play having scored some excellent frees. Shane continued to work hard in the middle of the field laying off some great ball and Oisin Auzins was having a fierce battle with Newmarket full forward who never gave up and got two goals in the end but we kept responding with some lovely points.
Jack Ryan stood in goal for the second half doing a very good job with Louis moving up to full forward and putting in a good shift there. Conor Mac moved half back getting on a lot of ball with Fergus and Fionan getting out in front all through keeping the home side at bay. Diarmuid was commanding at centre back delivering great ball to our forwards with Tommy having moved up adding two points to the scoreboard.
Overall, very impressive first outing with some very good hurling in heavy ground conditions from our lads finishing up winning on a score line of 3-19 to 2-1
Well Done lads
Big thanks to all who made the long journey and supported the lads
